Painters Block

As I mentioned in prior posts, I had shoulder surgery for the 2nd time this year in December and have been unable to paint since then. The Doc gave me the go ahead a few weeks ago and I hit the easel hard. Unfortunately the "mojo" hasn't been flowing! When I take that much time off, things don't come easy. It seems harder to get into the zone. So I decided to post some of the paintings of other artists I greatly admire, that I have been fortunate to acquire while not painting. I love buying these little gems since I learn so much from studying them. They are like workshop demos to me and often remain at my studio unframed!
I received this beauty last week. It is by Fongwei Liu, an amazing artist living in the bay area. Check out his blog at http://fongwei.blogspot.com. He has been posting amazing plein air pieces he has been doing in between the rain!

This is the fabulous space I get to work in. I will miss being there for a few weeks while I recover from shoulder surgery. As soon as the Doc gives me the ok, I will be back in the studio. Last summer I had the same shoulder done, and missed painting so much I began painting with my left hand! It produces a looser more impressionistic painting that a great studies for larger paintings with my right hand. Please join us for our quarterly gallery strolls where over 25 artists open up there studios to show their new works.

STUDIO 8

I've decided to start a new blog focusing on current paintings on my easel.
About 4 years ago, I drove by a for lease sign out in front of an old brick warehouse in Millcreek Township. The owner of the property, Kevin Flynn, had purchased the old buildings that had once housed a radio parts factory. A musician himself (www.kevinflynnjazz.com), Kevin wanted to be surrounded by creative energy and made the decision to convert the property into working artist studios. Needless to say the space was filled up within a week. I feel so fortunate to be able to work in such an old historic building and be surrounded by such a high calibre of artists. I share a space with Candy Rideout, who on more than one occassion has been able to critique a painting on my easel that is not working! 4 times a year the studios are cleaned up and opened to the public for a gallery stroll and sale. Please join us on Nov. 21st from noon to nine at Studio 8!
